Travelling in a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) is a noticeably different experience compared with a standard car, both for the driver and for the wheelchair user. While a traditional car is designed with fixed seating and a uniform layout, a WAV is built around the needs of someone who remains in their wheelchair while travelling. This difference in layout changes how journeys feel, how conversations happen, and even how the road is experienced.
Once inside a WAV, the first thing many people notice is the change in seating position. Wheelchair users are usually seated further back than in a typical car or, in some cases, upfront beside the driver. Sitting further back can sometimes make it harder to engage in conversation. When the WAV is designed with a front passenger wheelchair space, it usually feels more sociable and natural, especially for those used to sitting next to the driver in a standard car. This means a wheelchair passenger may feel slight shifts or vibrations as the vehicle moves, particularly over uneven surfaces or speed bumps. Because WAVs often have lowered floors to increase headroom, ground clearance is reduced. This means extra care is needed when navigating speed bumps or steep driveways, as the underside of the vehicle is more likely to make contact with the road if taken too quickly.
The view from inside a WAV is also different. Most wheelchair users sit higher than in a standard car seat, which can give a better view out of the windows and sometimes a more engaging travel experience. Nevertheless, this change in perspective may also take some getting used to, especially for those who are more comfortable being lower down and surrounded by standard car interiors. The elevated position can also increase the sensation of movement, which may contribute to feelings of travel sickness for some passengers.
For drivers, handling a WAV can be noticeably different. WAVs are usually larger than standard cars in terms of height, width and length. This makes them feel more like driving a van or people carrier. Manoeuvring in tight car parks or entering multi-storey buildings with restricted height can require more care and planning. Visibility can also differ, depending on the window layout and whether additional mirrors or parking sensors have been fitted. The ride quality may feel firmer or bouncier, particularly if the rear suspension has been modified to accommodate a lowered floor or additional equipment.
Despite these differences, WAVs are designed to be easy to live with. Many people find that once they’ve adapted to the layout and feel of the vehicle, travelling becomes second nature. Seating configurations can often be tailored to suit different needs, and with careful planning, the experience of using a WAV can be both comfortable and practical. Over time, what may initially feel unusual becomes a different but equally valid way to enjoy the independence and freedom of road travel.
